The Gospel of Luke Ch 6 Verse 20 thru 26
20 And raising his eyes toward his disciples he said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God is yours. 21 Blessed are you who are now hungry, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who are now weeping, for you will laugh. 22 Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude and insult you, and denounce your name as evil on account of the Son of Man. 23 Rejoice and leap for joy on that day! Behold, your reward will be great in heaven. For their ancestors treated the prophets in the same way. 24 But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. 25 But woe to you who are filled now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will grieve and weep. 26 Woe to you when all speak well of you, for their ancestors treated the false prophets in this way.
In Luke 6:20-26, Jesus presents a profound connection of blessings and woes. He speaks directly to those in need, assuring the poor, the hungry, and those who weep that they are blessed in the eyes of God. Equally, He pronounces woes upon the rich, the satisfied, and those who laugh, suggesting that worldly success does not equate to divine favor. This Gospel challenges us to reconsider our values and priorities, especially in a society that often celebrates material success over spiritual fulfillment.
Today on September 9, we honor Saint Peter Claver, who reflects the essence of this passage through his life and ministry. Claver dedicated himself to serving the enslaved Africans who were brought to the Americas, embodying the love and compassion that Jesus advocates in Luke. Claver famously said, “To love God as He ought to be loved, we must be detached from all temporal love. We must love nothing but him, or if we love anything else, we must love it only for his sake.” This quote beautifully encapsulates his commitment to the enslaved individuals, as he saw them not merely as victims of a heinous trade but as children of God deserving of love and dignity.
Throughout his life, Saint Peter Claver baptized over 300,000 enslaved people, welcoming them into the faith with open arms and an open heart. He understood that they were among those Jesus called “the poor” and “the oppressed,” and he worked tirelessly to alleviate their suffering. His deep devotion to God compelled him to act against the injustices of slavery, demonstrating how faith can drive one to serve those in desperate need. Claver’s service was not merely charity; it was an inseparable bond of God’s love in Christ for the marginalized.
In light of this Gospel reading, we are confronted with the challenge of aligning our lives with Jesus’ priorities. Are we willing to step out of our comfort zones to serve those society often overlooks? As we reflect on the example of Saint Peter Claver today, we are called to embody his spirit of selfless love and unwavering commitment to justice. Let us remember that true richness lies in our relationships with God and others, particularly the least among us, echoing the blessings proclaimed by Christ. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever.
I am sorry Lord. I believe You died and rose for me. Please forgive me as I forgive others. I share You as my Lord and Savior seeking to live your Will in all things. **Blessed Are You When People Hate You**
In the valley where the humble dwell,
A voice of hope, a truth to tell,
Blessed are the poor, the meek, the low,
For in their hearts, My light will grow.
Woe to the rich, who find their ease,
In comfort’s grasp, their souls appease.
For every laugh, a fleeting sound,
Shall turn to sorrow when they are found.
The hungry cry, their spirits bare,
Yet from their want, they lift a prayer.
For every tear and every ache,
The Kingdom’s promise they will wake.
Rejoice, O souls, in trials you face,
For heaven holds a warm embrace.
When scorn and hate upon you rain,
The path of love will break the chain.
In a world that values power and pride,
Find treasure in the meek to eternally abide.
For those who mourn and those who strive,
Will see the truth in Christ’s love alive.
So heed the words, both bold and bright,
In weakness, there shines a truer light.
The tables turned, the last made first,
In humble hearts, blessings thirst. Amen.
