Jeremiah Chapter 26 Verse One thru Nine
1 In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came from the LORD: 2 Thus says the LORD: Stand in the court of the house of the LORD and speak to the inhabitants of all the cities of Judah who come to worship in the house of the LORD; whatever I command you, tell them, and hold nothing back. 3 Perhaps they will listen and turn, all of them from their evil way, so that I may repent of the evil I plan to inflict upon them for their evil deeds. 4 Say to them: Thus says the LORD: If you do not obey me, by walking according to the law I set before you 5 and listening to the words of my servants the prophets, whom I kept sending you, even though you do not listen to them, 6 I will treat this house like Shiloh, and make this city a curse for all the nations of the earth. 7 Now the priests, the prophets, and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the LORD. 8 When Jeremiah finished speaking all that the LORD commanded him to speak to all the people, then the priests, the prophets, and all the people laid hold of him, crying, “You must die! 9 Why do you prophesy in the name of the LORD: ‘This house shall become like Shiloh,’ and ‘This city shall be desolate, without inhabitant’?” And all the people crowded around Jeremiah in the house of the LORD.
Jeremiah 26:1-9 recounts a pivotal moment in the ministry of the prophet Jeremiah during the reign of King Jehoiakim of Judah. This passage describes God’s command to Jeremiah to deliver a prophetic message in the temple, warning the people of impending disaster due to their persistent disobedience and idolatry. The timing of this call is significant, occurring in the early part of Jehoiakim’s reign, a period marked by social unrest and spiritual decay in Judah.
In verses 2 and 3, God instructs Jeremiah to speak publicly and proclaim that if the people do not repent from their evil ways, Jerusalem will face destruction akin to Shiloh, a city that had been irreparably judged by God. This comparison serves as a stark reminder of God’s judgment on unfaithfulness, urging the people to reconsider their actions and return to covenant faithfulness.
As Jeremiah delivers this message, he faces immediate opposition. Verses 7-9 depict how the priests, prophets, and the crowd react with hostility, accusing him of treasonous blasphemy. The dramatic response emphasizes the divided feelings within the community regarding the prophetic word and highlights the challenges faced by true prophets in confronting societal norms.
This passage illustrates the tension between divine instruction and human reception. Jeremiah’s experience reveals the cost of prophetic integrity in a context where the truth is often unwelcome. Ultimately, it serves as a cautionary tale of the dire consequences of ignoring God’s warnings, urging both the original audience and modern readers to heed the call to repentance and faithfulness. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever.
I am sorry Lord. I believe You died and rose for me. Please forgive me as I forgive others. I share You as my Lord and Savior seeking to live your Will in all things. Prayers for wife Toni and my mother Betty pray for our children especially our two oldest Alexandra & Allen Son in Law Mark Stern; Julian, Gabriel and Jeffrey and our grandchildren Oliver, Julian and Elliott. We pray for those we’ve said we’d pray for and those who’ve asked us to pray for them. We pray for the dying as we do each day Lord give them peace in their last breath. **Thus Says The Lord**
In the days of old, when the world was torn,
A voice arose, in warning adorned.
Jeremiah stood, with courage ablaze,
Proclaiming God’s word in a tumultuous haze.
In the year of reign, of a king so bold,
A message was sent, a story retold.
From the temple’s heart, with the people around,
A cry for repentance, a truth to astound.
“Turn from your ways, mend your hearts of stone,
For judgment is nearing, you’re not alone.
The Lord’s fierce anger, like fire can burn,
Repent, O Jerusalem, now take your turn.”
The people were gathered, some moved in fear,
“What madness is this? Why does he come here?”
“His words are like thunder, yet tender with grace,
A call to redemption, a hope to embrace.”
But the priests and the prophets, in anger they stirred,
“Cast him aside! Let none heed his word!”
“In the name of the Lord, he brings us disgrace,
We cannot allow such a light in this holy place!”
Yet Jeremiah’s heart, with courage so vast,
Faced the scorn of the crowd, stood firm to the last.
For the message was clear, though darkness might stand,
God’s love is a river, extending His hand.
So listen, dear souls, to the echoes of old,
In the heart of the temple, through stories retold.
For warnings still whisper from ages gone by,
Inviting each spirit to rise, to ask why.
In humility seek, and with faith, do behold,
The gift of repentance, like treasure, like gold.
For within every word, there’s a chance to renew,
And a path of salvation awaits me and you. Amen.
