07-29-2026 Luke 10 v3842 Mary Has Chosen The Better Part
The Gospel of Luke Chapter 10 Verse 38 thru 42
38 As they continued their journey he entered a village where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him. 39 She had a sister named Mary [who] sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak. 40 Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me.” 41 The Lord said to her in reply, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. 42 There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.”
Today, as we remember Saints Martha, Mary, and Lazarus on their Memorial Day, we reflect on the profound lessons embedded in Luke 10:38-42. In this passage, we encounter Jesus visiting the home of Martha and Mary. While Martha busily prepares for their guest, Mary chooses to sit at Jesus’ feet, listening attentively to His teachings. Martha, overwhelmed with her responsibilities, appeals to Jesus, asking Him to tell Mary to help her. In response, Jesus gently admonishes Martha, saying, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things; but one thing is needful. Mary has chosen the better part, and it will not be taken away from her.”
This exchange highlights the tension between being productive and being present. Martha, though well-intentioned, expresses worry and frustration, striving to fulfill her duties as a host. In contrast, Mary exemplifies the perfect disciple, prioritizing her relationship with Jesus above societal expectations or obligations. When Jesus declares that Mary has chosen the “better part,” He emphasizes the importance of spiritual nourishment over material concerns. The “one thing” that is needed is a deep connection with God, which cannot be overshadowed by earthly tasks.
On this Memorial of Saints Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, we are reminded that both action and contemplation serve meaningful purposes in our spiritual lives. However, Jesus’ words urge us to prioritize our relationship with Him. In our busyness, may we not forget to pause, listen, and be present with the Lord. The richness of spiritual life, which Mary embraced, is our true sustenance and blessing that will not be taken from us. Amen.

At the Savior’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever.
I am sorry Lord. I believe You died and rose for me. Please forgive me as I forgive others. I share You as my Lord and Savior seeking to live your Will in all things. Prayers for wife Toni and my mother Betty pray for our children especially our two oldest Alexandra & Allen Son in Law Mark Stern; Julian, Gabriel and Jeffrey and our grandchildren Oliver, Julian and Elliott. We pray for those we’ve said we’d pray for and those who’ve asked us to pray for them. We pray for the dying as we do each day Lord give them peace in their last breath. We pray for Holy Mother Church. Our prayers for our niece Brittany. In Jesus Precious Blood by His Name we pray. Amen.

**Mary Has Chosen The Better Part**
In a humble home, where kindness dwells,
Two sisters welcomed Jesus, as the story tells.
Martha, the bustling, with tasks all around,
Preparing a feast, her cares tightly wound.
She stirred in the kitchen, with pots all ablaze,
While Mary sat quietly, lost in His gaze.
The Teacher spoke softly, His wisdom poured forth,
A moment of stillness, a treasure of worth.
Martha, distracted, with worry and strife,
Called out in frustration, “Lord, I’m missing my life!
See how I labor, with no one to share,
Tell Mary to join me, to help with the fare.”
But Jesus looked tenderly, His voice calm and clear,
“Martha, dear Martha, do not live in fear.
For only one thing is needed this faithful day,
And Mary has chosen the best, I would earnestly say.”
In the stillness of listening, her heart was set free,
To linger in presence, to savor, to be.
Amidst all the busyness, in the rush of our lives,
Let’s find in our silence where true wisdom thrives.
So let us remember, amidst all we pursue,
That the heart of our service begins in truth.
For the moments of stillness, of love and of grace,
Are where we find Jesus and seek His embrace. Amen.
