The Gospel of Matthew Chapter 13 Verse 1 thru 23
1 On that day, Jesus went out of the house and sat down by the sea. 2 Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat down, and the whole crowd stood along the shore. 3 And he spoke to them at length in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow. 4 And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path, and birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil. It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep, 6 and when the sun rose it was scorched, and it withered for lack of roots. 7 Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it. 8 But some seed fell on rich soil, and produced fruit, a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold. 9 Whoever has ears ought to hear.” 10 The disciples approached him and said, “Why do you speak to them in parables?” 11 He said to them in reply, “Because knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven has been granted to you, but to them it has not been granted. 12 To anyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich; from anyone who has not, even what he has will be taken away. 13 This is why I speak to them in parables, because ‘they look but do not see and hear but do not listen or understand.’ 14 Isaiah’s prophecy is fulfilled in them, which says: ‘You shall indeed hear but not understand, you shall indeed look but never see. 15 Gross is the heart of this people, they will hardly hear with their ears, they have closed their eyes, lest they see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and be converted, and I heal them.’ 16 “But blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, because they hear. 17 Amen, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it. 18 “Hear then the parable of the sower. 19 The seed sown on the path is the one who hears the word of the kingdom without understanding it, and the evil one comes and steals away what was sown in his heart. 20 The seed sown on rocky ground is the one who hears the word and receives it at once with joy. 21 But he has no root and lasts only for a time. When some tribulation or persecution comes because of the word, he immediately falls away. 22 The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word, but then worldly anxiety and the lure of riches choke the word and it bears no fruit. 23 But the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.”
In Matthew 13:1-23, we encounter the parable of the sower, a profound teaching of Jesus that reveals the varied responses of people to the message of the kingdom of heaven. As Jesus speaks in parables, He illustrates how different conditions of the heart affect one’s reception of His word. The sower scatters seed, which represents the gospel, and it falls on four types of soil, each symbolizing the differing responses of individuals.
The first group, represented by the path, hears the message but does not understand it, allowing the evil one to snatch it away. The rocky ground embodies those who initially receive the message with joy but fall away when faced with trials, revealing a superficial faith. The thorns signify those who become distracted by worldly concerns and desires, choking the truth that is trying to grow within them. Finally, the good soil represents those who hear, understand, and actively live out the word, producing fruit in their lives.
To the believers, this passage serves as a reminder that the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven have been graciously revealed to those who place their faith in Jesus as their Savior. It is our relationship with Him that grants us insight and understanding of these eternal truths. As His followers, we are called not just to receive the word but to cultivate our hearts as good soil, allowing it to take root and flourish.
Let us reflect on our own responses to the gospel. Are we investing time in cultivating our faith amidst the distractions of life? May we seek to deepen our understanding and live out the truths bestowed upon us, demonstrating the transformative power of the kingdom of heaven. Amen.
Join me as we pray our daily prayer of forgiveness. The Lord’s Prayer.
At the Savior’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever.

**Parables That Heal Them And Convert Them**
In fields of grain where the winds do sigh,
A teacher spoke as the crowds drew nigh,
From seed to soil, a parable spun,
In Matthew’s tale, the hearts of many won.
He sat by the sea, where the waters gleamed,
And spoke of a sower, whose hope brightly beamed.
With scattered seeds on the earthen floor,
Each grain a promise, each sprout a door.
Some fell on the path, where the footsteps trod,
Hard hearts that heard, but dismissed the Word of God.
The birds swooped down, with a caw and a cry,
Devouring the truth as it fluttered by.
Some found the rocks, where the soil was thin,
Sprouted with fervor, but soon could not win.
When the sun blazed fierce, their faith swiftly wilted,
In trials and troubles, their fervor was stilted.
Others fell amongst thorns, which choked out the grace,
Worldly desires took away their place.
Though they heard the call, the riches ensnared,
Leaving little room for the fruit that they bared.
But some seeds landed in fertile ground,
Roots sank deep, life abundant was found.
With patience they grew, in love they did thrive,
Bearing a harvest that felt so alive.
Thirtyfold, sixty, a hundred they gave,
Those who would listen, the truth they would save.
So open your ears, and soften your heart,
For wisdom springs forth when we each play our part.
In this ancient tale, let us all take heed,
To nurture the seeds of the love that we need.
For in every story, His truth brightly shines,
In the garden of grace, His Word intertwines. Amen.
