07-01-2026 Matthew 8 v2834 The Demons Pleaded With Jesus
The Gospel of Matthew Chapter 8 Verse 28 thru 34
28 When he came to the other side, to the territory of the Gadarenes, two demoniacs who were coming from the tombs met him. They were so savage that no one could travel by that road. 29 They cried out, “What have you to do with us, Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the appointed time?” 30 Some distance away a herd of many swine was feeding. 31 The demons pleaded with him, “If you drive us out, send us into the herd of swine.” 32 And he said to them, “Go then!” They came out and entered the swine, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea where they drowned. 33 The swineherds ran away, and when they came to the town they reported everything, including what had happened to the demoniacs. 34 Thereupon the whole town came out to meet Jesus, and when they saw him they begged him to leave their district.
In Matthew 8:28-34, we encounter a powerful episode that demonstrates Jesus’ authority over evil spirits. Upon crossing the Sea of Galilee, Jesus is met by two demoniacs who are described as being excessively violent and living in the tombs. They recognize Jesus as the Son of God, understanding His divine authority even before His followers do. The demons residing within the men plead with Jesus not to torment them, indicating that they recognize His ability to cast them out. This highlights the spiritual battle between good and evil that the Gospel often addresses.
Jesus, exercising His authority, commands the demons to leave the men, demonstrating His power over the supernatural realm. The demons then request to be sent into a herd of pigs grazing nearby. Jesus permits this, and as a result, the pigs rush down a steep bank into the sea and drown. This dramatic outcome underscores the destructive nature of the demons, as their presence led not only to the torment of the individuals but also to the loss of the pigs.
The local herders, witnessing this event, flee to the city to report what has happened. The townspeople come out to see for themselves and are confronted with the sight of the formerly possessed men, now healed and sitting peacefully with Jesus. However, instead of rejoicing over the miracle, the people are filled with fear. They beg Jesus to leave their district, likely due to a combination of fear of His power and concern over the loss of their livelihood represented by the drowned pigs. The episode serves as a reminder of the transformative power of Jesus, as well as the discomfort that such divine authority can engender in those not ready to embrace it. Amen.
Join me as we pray our daily prayer of forgiveness. The Lord’s Prayer.
At the Savior’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever.
I am sorry Lord. I believe You died and rose for me. Please forgive me as I forgive others. I share You as my Lord and Savior seeking to live your Will in all things. **The Demons Pleaded With Jesus**
In the land of the Gadarenes, where shadows dance,
Two men possessed by darkness held their grim stance.
With spirits unclean, they roamed the tombs’ night,
Violent and fierce, shunning the light.
They cried out to Jesus, “What have we to do?
Son of God, we know, it’s you we pursue.
Have you come to torment us before our time?
Is this day of reckoning truly our crime?”
A herd of swine grazed on the hillside near,
As Jesus commanded, their fate became clear.
“Go forth,” He declared to the demons inside,
They rushed to the swine, in chaos they cried.
The pigs, now possessed, leaped down the steep slope,
Into the abyss, they lost all their hope.
The waters received them, the thunderous crash,
The townsfolk arrived with a panic and flash.
They came to see what had taken place there,
And found Jesus seated, His countenance rare.
The men now restored, in their right minds at peace,
Their torment now ended, their suffering ceased.
Yet fear gripped the hearts of the people that day,
“Leave us,” they pleaded, “we don’t want You to stay.”
For loss can lay heavy where faith often wanes,
They valued their swine more than healing from pains.
So Jesus departed, their choice made so clear,
As the men told the story, all could now hear.
Of mercy and power, of darkness set free,
A testament spoken of what love can be. Amen.
