The Gospel of Matthew Chapter 8 Verse 18 thru 27
18 When Jesus saw a crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side. 19 A scribe approached and said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” 20 Jesus answered him, “Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.” 21 Another of [his] disciples said to him, “Lord, let me go first and bury my father.” 22 But Jesus answered him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their dead.” 23 He got into a boat and his disciples followed him. 24 Suddenly a violent storm came up on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by waves; but he was asleep. 25 They came and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!” 26 He said to them, “Why are you terrified, O you of little faith?” Then he got up, rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was great calm. 27 The men were amazed and said, “What sort of man is this, whom even the winds and the sea obey?”
In Matthew 8:18-27, we witness a powerful moment that encapsulates the essence of faith and fear in the face of uncertainty. As Jesus prepares to cross the Sea of Galilee, He calls His disciples to follow Him, a call that demands not only commitment but also trust in His promises. The passage highlights two distinct scenarios: the choice of a scribe who is eager to follow Jesus but hesitates due to personal attachments, and the tempest that strikes as they embark on their journey across the water.
When the storm arises, the disciples, despite having been witnesses to Jesus’ miracles, become engulfed in fear and doubt. They wake Jesus, who is asleep in the boat, questioning His care for them during this perilous moment. His response, “O you of little faith,” is more than a rebuke; it reflects His expectation that His followers will trust Him, even when circumstances seem dire.
This narrative prompts us to reflect on our own faith journey. Are we, like the disciples, quick to succumb to fear when faced with life’s storms? Or do we hold firm to our faith, trusting that Jesus is with us in every trial? The call to follow Christ is often accompanied by uncertainty, but it is also a call to a deeper faith—a faith that acknowledges our fears yet chooses to focus on His power and presence.
As you consider this passage, ask yourself: Are you someone whom Jesus might call, “O you of little faith?” Are there areas in your life where doubt creeps in, challenging your trust in His guidance? May we strive to strengthen our faith, anchoring ourselves in the knowledge that Jesus is always with us, calming our storms with His peace. Amen.
Join me as we pray our daily prayer of forgiveness. The Lord’s Prayer.
At the Savior’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever.

Ephesians 6:17-20
06-30-2026 Matthew 8 v1827
**O You Of Little Faith**
In a land where the weary sought rest from their toil,
A Savior stood heavy, ready to uncoil
The mysteries of faith, through tempest and storm,
In the heart of the sea, His presence forewarned.
The multitudes gathered, their needs laid bare,
To follow Him closely, their hearts filled with care.
“Foxes have holes, and nests for birds of the air,
But the Son of Man has no home anywhere.”
A scribe came forth, with words laced in bold,
“Teacher, I’ll follow, my heart to be sold!”
Yet Jesus, discerning the weight of the cost,
Knew the path of the faithful is often tempest-loss.
Another, a disciple, sought leave to go home,
To tend to the dead and in sorrow to roam.
“Let the dead bury their dead,” was the call,
For the call to discipleship surpasses them all.
Then onto a boat, as the evening drew near,
He beckoned His followers, “Come, cast aside fear.”
The waves whipped and raged, the winds howled wild,
Yet in the stern of the boat, slept the Man reconciled.
The storm blared its fury, the disciples in dread,
“Master, we’re perishing!” in panic they said.
But He rose with a calmness that quelled the great sea,
“Peace! Be still!” and the chaos ceased to be.
The winds and the waves surrendered to grace,
The disciples looked on, awe etched on each face.
“Who is this man, that the winds heed His sighs?”
In their hearts stirred the wonder, the depths of the skies.
So in life’s fierce tempests, when shadows draw near,
Remember His power, cast aside your fear.
For the one who calmed waters, holds all in His hand,
In the storm and the stillness, He’s the Rock where we stand. Amen.
