The Gospel of Matthew Chapter 5 Verse 38 thru 42
38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 But I say to you, offer no resistance to one who is evil. When someone strikes you on [your] right cheek, turn the other one to him as well. 40 If anyone wants to go to law with you over your tunic, hand him your cloak as well. 41 Should anyone press you into service for one mile, go with him for two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks of you, and do not turn your back on one who wants to borrow.
Matthew 5:38-42 presents a profound teaching from Jesus concerning how we respond to wrongdoing and evil. In these verses, Jesus addresses the familiar principle of “an eye for an eye,” advocating instead for a radical approach rooted in love and forgiveness. He challenges His followers to transcend the instinct for retaliation, urging them to turn the other cheek and to respond with generosity rather than hostility.
The concept of seeking revenge often leads to a cycle of animosity that spirals out of control. When individuals respond to evil with further evil, it creates a friction that deepens divisions, perpetuates hatred, and fosters an environment where forgiveness seems impossible. In contrast, Jesus’ call to forgiveness and non-resistance breaks this cycle. By choosing to rise above the impulse for revenge, individuals begin to heal both themselves and their relationships with others.
Forgiveness is not merely an act of letting go; it is a courageous commitment to dismantling anger and resentment within one’s heart. It requires strength and vulnerability, but the transformative power of forgiveness lies in its ability to disarm hostility. When we refuse to retaliate, we model a different kind of strength—a strength rooted in love and compassion.
Moreover, Jesus’ teachings remind us that we are interconnected. Our responses to others have wider implications, influencing the community around us. Choosing mercy over vengeance not only liberates the heart but fosters a more just and peaceful society.
The wisdom found in Matthew 5:38-42 inspires us to choose the path of forgiveness over retribution. Rather than perpetuating cycles of hatred, let us embrace the transformative power of love and forgiveness, creating a world free from the burdens of animosity. Amen.
Join me as we pray our daily prayer of forgiveness. The Lord’s Prayer.
At the Savior’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever.

Ephesians 6:17-20

**Eye For An Eye**
In the shadow of the mount, where wisdom speaks,
A voice resounds, the humble heart seeks.
“An eye for an eye” the law once declared,
But higher love beckons, where mercy is spared.
When wronged, do not strike back in fierce rage,
Turn the other cheek, find peace on life’s stage.
For vengeance is bitter, it darkens the soul,
But kindness reframes the heart, makes it whole.
If one takes your cloak, let him have your shirt,
In giving, find grace, in love, overcome the hurt.
To walk an extra mile, to bear another’s road,
Transforms the burden, lightens the load.
So to those who ask, generously give,
Embrace radical love, let compassion live.
For in turning the tables, we learn what is true,
In the heart’s gentle mercy, we find strength anew.
Not just to be righteous, in actions so bold,
But to mirror the love that we seek to behold.
In the teachings of grace, let our spirits ascend,
For the greater command is to love without end. Amen.
