The Gospel of Matthew Chapter 9/10 Verse 36-38 thru 1-8

At the sight of the crowds, Jesus’ heart was moved with pity for them
because they were troubled and abandoned,
like sheep without a shepherd.
Then he said to his disciples,
“The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few;
so ask the master of the harvest
to send out laborers for his harvest.”

Then he summoned his twelve disciples
and gave them authority over unclean spirits
to drive them out and to cure every disease and every illness.
The names of the twelve apostles are these:
first, Simon called Peter, and his brother Andrew;
James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John;
Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the tax collector;
James, the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddeus;
Simon from Cana, and Judas Iscariot who betrayed him.

Jesus sent out these twelve after instructing them thus,
“Do not go into pagan territory or enter a Samaritan town.
Go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
As you go, make this proclamation: ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’
Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, drive out demons.
Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.”

Matthew 9:36-38 and Matthew 10:1-8 present a compelling narrative about Jesus’ compassion for the multitudes and His empowerment of the disciples. In Matthew 9:36, we see Jesus observing the crowds, described as “harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” This vivid imagery captures the spiritual state of the people, lacking guidance and direction. Moved by compassion, Jesus underscores the urgency of the situation by stating that the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. He calls on His followers to pray earnestly for more workers to be sent into the harvest, emphasizing the importance of outreach and evangelism.

Transitioning to Matthew 10, Jesus responds to the need by empowering His twelve disciples. He gives them authority over unclean spirits and the power to heal every disease and affliction. This commissioning marks a pivotal moment where the disciples are transitioned from followers to active participants in Jesus’ mission. They are tasked with preaching the message of the Kingdom, healing the sick, raising the dead, cleansing lepers, and casting out demons. This delegation of authority not only demonstrates Jesus’ confidence in His disciples but also signifies their critical role in the continuation of His ministry.

The passage highlights themes of compassion, empowerment, and urgency in the Christian mission. Jesus’ call to prayer and action challenges believers today to recognize the needs around them and to respond with both intercession and active service. The connection between prayer and action underscores that while the harvest may be abundant, it requires dedicated laborers who are willing to step into the work of God. These verses encourage Christians to engage with their communities, reflecting the love and authority of Christ in practical ways. Amen.

Join me as we pray our daily prayer of forgiveness. The Lord’s Prayer.

At the Savior’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever.

06-14-2026 Matthew 9?10 v3608

**Without Cost You Have Received**

In the quiet of the dawn’s embrace,

The Master calls His chosen place,

Twelve disciples, hearts aflame,

To spread His word, to lift His name.

He grants them power, a holy trust,

To heal the sick and raise the just.

With whispers soft of hope and peace,

They go forth bold, their fears released.

“Go to the lost, the weak, the blind,

Declare the kingdom, love intertwined.

Freely you received, now freely give,

In every heart, let grace revive.”

From village small to city wide,

With every step, the Spirit’s guide.

The gifts they bear, no gold or fame,

But words of life in Jesus’ name.

So let the news of love resound,

In every corner, be it found.

For healing hands and tender grace,

Shall mark the world for His embrace.

In humble hearts, the call rings clear,

To share the truth, bring hope and cheer.

For in their journey, we too partake,

To be His light, for love’s sweet sake. Amen.
