The Gospel of Matthew Chapter 5 Verse 33 thru 37
33 “Again you have heard that it was said to your ancestors, ‘Do not take a false oath, but make good to the Lord all that you vow.’ 34 But I say to you, do not swear at all; not by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35 nor by the earth, for it is his footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 Do not swear by your head, for you cannot make a single hair white or black. 37 Let your ‘Yes’ mean ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No’ mean ‘No.’ Anything more is from the evil one.
In Matthew 5:33-37, Jesus addresses the importance of integrity in our speech. He begins by referencing the Old Testament law, emphasizing that while oaths and vows were a part of religious practice, they should not be taken lightly. Instead, Jesus calls His followers to a higher standard: to let their ‘yes’ be ‘yes’ and their ‘no’ be ‘no.’ This teaching challenges us to reflect on the authenticity of our words and the intention behind them.
The tendency to swear oaths often stems from a desire to convince others of our truthfulness. However, Jesus teaches that our everyday speech should be so reliable that no oath is necessary. Our words should embody honesty, sincerity, and trustworthiness, characteristics that reflect the character of Christ. When we trust in the name of Jesus and allow His spirit to guide us, we cultivate a heart of integrity. This shift not only impacts how we communicate but also strengthens our relationships, as others can rely on our words without the need for additional assurance.
Overcoming the habit of swearing or exaggerating can be a transformative journey. It requires us to examine not only our speech but also the motivations behind our desire to swear. As we grow in our faith and trust in Jesus, we learn to value truth and integrity. By committing ourselves to being truthful in all circumstances, we align ourselves more closely with God’s will.
In a world where words can be easily manipulated, let us strive to be a beacon of honesty. By trusting in Jesus and embodying His teachings, we can overcome the pressures to embellish our speech and represent Him faithfully in all that we say. Amen.
Join me as we pray our daily prayer of forgiveness. The Lord’s Prayer.
At the Savior’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever.

Ephesians 6:17-20

**Yes Mean Yes No Mean No**
In the quiet whispers of the mount,
A teaching profound, of truth to recount,
“Let your yes be yes, and your no be no,”
A lesson in trust, where honesty flows.
No oaths or vows, to bind what we say,
For each word must stand, come what may.
In the tapestry woven of all that we speak,
Integrity shines, sincere not weak.
“Do not invoke the heavens, nor the earth beneath,
For the promise of hearts is the truest bequeath.”
In the simplicity found in each honest vow,
We find our foundation, our sacred now.
For when words can falter, and intentions can sway,
Let your heart guide your voice, in a truthful ballet.
In each gentle utterance, let sincerity grow,
With a spirit that honors the beauty of “so.”
So speak with intent, let your spirit reflect,
The weight of your promise, the love you protect.
In the echoes of ages, this wisdom will stay—
Let your yes be yes, and your no be no way. Amen.
