The Gospel of Matthew Chapter 28 Verse 11 thru 15
11 While they were going, some of the guard went into the city and told the chief priests all that had happened. 12 They assembled with the elders and took counsel; then they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers, 13 telling them, “You are to say, ‘His disciples came by night and stole him while we were asleep.’ 14 And if this gets to the ears of the governor, we will satisfy [him] and keep you out of trouble.” 15 The soldiers took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story has circulated among the Jews to the present [day].
In Matthew 28:11-15, the narrative unfolds shortly after the resurrection of Jesus Christ, presenting a pivotal moment in early Christian history. The guards who witnessed the miraculous event were terrified and ultimately reported the resurrection to the chief priests. Instead of acknowledging this life-altering occurrence, the Jewish leaders conspired to suppress the truth. They bribed the soldiers to spread a false story, claiming that Jesus’ disciples had stolen His body while they slept.
The motivations behind this deception are multifaceted. Firstly, the resurrection of Jesus posed a significant threat to the Jewish religious authorities, as it undermined their power and influence. Recognizing Jesus as the Messiah validated His teachings and proved their leadership ineffective. Acknowledging the resurrection would have forced them to confront the reality of their mistaken judgment regarding Jesus, which was a bitter pill to swallow.
Additionally, the resurrection was a direct challenge to the Jewish understanding of authority and the law. The chief priests feared that accepting the resurrection would lead to a crisis of faith among the people, potentially causing them to abandon traditional beliefs and embrace the teachings of Jesus and His followers.
Moreover, the political ramifications were severe. The Romans had been wary of any movement that could incite rebellion, and an acknowledgment of a risen Messiah could provoke unrest. By laying the responsibility for Jesus’ disappearance on the disciples, the Jewish leaders sought to deflect blame and maintain control over the narrative.
In essence, the lies perpetuated by the Jewish leaders were born out of fear—fear of losing power, fear of the truth, and fear of the societal upheaval that accepting Jesus’ resurrection could bring. Their actions reflected a desperate attempt to cling to authority in the face of undeniable truth. Amen.
Join me as we pray our daily prayer of forgiveness. The Lord’s Prayer.
At the Savior’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever.

**Stole Him While You Were Asleep**
In the dawn’s soft light, when the earth did quake,
The guards stood silent, their hearts shook awake.
News both thrilling and dreadful took flight,
As a tale of the risen began in the night.
With fear in their eyes, they rushed to the town,
To share what they’d seen, to spread the renown.
But whispers of doubt quickly gathered in force,
A plot to deceive, a cunning discourse.
“His body was stolen,” the elders declared,
“A bribe for the soldiers, the truth could be spared.”
For lies wrapped in silver could silence the truth,
And fear drove the men to abandon their couth.
So they crafted a story, a web finely spun,
To hide what was clear: the victory won.
Yet echoes of faith continue to rise,
For the Spirit’s true power no tale can disguise.
Though kingdoms may falter and justice may bend,
The truth of the Savior, forever will blend,
In hearts that believe, in lives transformed whole,
For resurrection ignites every eternal soul. Amen.
