03-03-2026 Matthew 23 v0112 The Greatest Amongst You Must Be Your Servant
The Gospel of Matthew Chapter 23 Verse One thru Twelve
1 Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples, 2 saying, “The scribes and the Pharisees have taken their seat on the chair of Moses. 3 Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you, but do not follow their example. For they preach but they do not practice. 4 They tie up heavy burdens [hard to carry] and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they will not lift a finger to move them. 5 All their works are performed to be seen. They widen their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels. 6 They love places of honor at banquets, seats of honor in synagogues, 7 greetings in marketplaces, and the salutation ‘Rabbi.’ 8 As for you, do not be called ‘Rabbi.’ You have but one teacher, and you are all brothers. 9 Call no one on earth your father; you have but one Father in heaven. 10 Do not be called ‘Master’; you have but one master, the Messiah. 11 The greatest among you must be your servant. 12 Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”
Matthew 23:1-12 offers a profound lesson in humility and servitude as it records Jesus’ admonition against the hypocrisy of the religious leaders of His time. He calls out those who exalt themselves, reminding us that they will ultimately be humbled. In a society often enamored with wealth and status, these verses serve as a powerful reminder that true greatness in the eyes of God is measured not by material wealth or position, but by one’s willingness to be a servant to others.
Jesus emphasizes the importance of humility, stating that the greatest among us must be our servant. This principle challenges the conventional view of success, which often correlates with power and prominence. Instead, we are called to embrace a lifestyle of service, showing kindness and love to those around us. Wealth, influence, or knowledge are not at the forefront of God’s concerns; rather, it is how we share the joy of salvation that truly matters.
When we humble ourselves and serve others, we reflect the heart of Christ. It is through acts of love and service that we demonstrate our faith and relationship with God. We should not pursue recognition or accolades for our deeds but rather delight in the privilege of being vessels of His grace. As we consider our journeys, let’s remember—God does not care about our accumulated wealth but how we extend His love and joy to others.
In a world that often champions self-promotion, let us strive to be examples of humility, serving as Christ served. In doing so, we fulfill our calling and ensure that our lives reflect His light. Amen.
Join me as we pray our daily prayer of forgiveness. The Lord’s Prayer.
At the Savior’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever.

**The Greatest Amongst You Must Be Your Servant**
In the heart of the crowd, a Teacher stood tall,
Speaking truths that would echo, his voice a clarion call.
To the scribes and the Pharisees, with their robes grandly worn,
He imparted a message, both piercing and warm.
“Observe what they tell you, for wisdom they claim,
But heed not their actions; they play a proud game.
They load heavy burdens, yet will not lift a thing,
Hypocrisy dances where they wear their fine ring.
They seek the best seats, in the halls of renown,
Long titles and praises, they weave like a crown.
But in truth, I assure you, the greatest of all,
Is the one who humbles, the lowliest of all.
For whoever is greatest must take the one seat,
The servant of many, with love as their beat.
So live not for the accolades, don’t yearn for the light,
For true honor comes not from the world’s lofty height.
In humility’s whisper, find your truest gain,
For the last shall be first, and the proud will be slain.
So walk in the footsteps of love and of grace,
In the eyes of the humble, find your rightful place.”
Reflect on this lesson, let your heart be still,
For greatness is service, it’s love that we fill.
In the echoes of ages, may we heed the refrain,
That in serving each other, true honor we gain. Amen.
