Day Four of Congress Walking for Truth in the Florida Keys…

Day Four of Congress Walking Cruz-Wiggins Petition Drive began this morning at 6 AM from the back lot of the Disabled American Veteran’s chapter of Marathon, Florida in a tent next to Marathon Airport. It was a quiet night with minimal mosquito’s and no flights arriving on the runway next to our campsite.

I traveled down to McDonalds and worked on my BLOG and daily Scripture Study I share with several hundred people before backtracking to Mile Marker 47 at the beginning of the Seven Mile Bridge as you enter Marathon. The stretch at Marathon is about 7 miles long and I decided I would walk US 1 in two mile intervals. We first stopped at the American Legion and spoke to several veterans there and accomplished several petitions being signed. Many asked why these politicians stay in Washington for so long. Because we keep voting them in was my answer not realizing we have been hurting our government of the people becoming a government of career politicians.

After cooling off at the American Legion, we headed North along US 1 again coming upon a homeless man who was carrying his suitcase, cooler on wheels and a duffle bag. As I approached him, I spoke aloud and told him who I was and what I was doing. He greeted me with a handshake and said, “A goal worth attaining. Admirable and honorable thing to work towards.” He went on to tell me a little about his life. How he’d lost his life savings trying to open a business. “I don’t want handouts. I can work for my own needs. Unlike many I have run across on the streets today.” As we parted, I said a prayer with him and asked God to give him guidance and safety.

I continued along the stretch of US 1 feeling surprisingly good and I decided to walk non stop to where I slept the night before at Disabled American Veterans Chapter. Once there I had recorded a little more than 5 and half miles so I could rest there and have lunch. Inside the chapter, I spoke to a veteran and his wife about the obstacles our country is up against and they echoed the call for Washington to have a complete change of guard.

Finally we moved on to Grassy Key where I walked along US 1 for a mile or so up to the restaurant called The Wreck owned and operated by Betty and Tim Langdon. After talking to Betty for a bit to update her where I was at in my walk, we sat down in the restaurant and enjoyed a cup of homemade Conch Chowder and a glass of sweet tea. If you get a chance to visit her establishment at Mile Maker 59, make sure you have some her homemade Key Lime cheesecake pie. Tomorrow my wife Toni will be joining me as I begin in Islamorada walking towards Tavernier and into Key Largo by Monday where we expect to spend a couple of days walking the neighborhoods as well as the Overseas Highway.
