The Gospel of Luke Ch 19 v- Nine thru Ten

9 And Jesus said to him, “Today Salvation has come to this house because this man too is a descendant of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save what was lost.”

Who is the lost? Why do they need to be saved? Why was a tax collector considered a sinner? In the context of this story, tax collectors were often seen as collaborators with the Roman Empire and were despised by the Jewish community. They were viewed as sinners and outcasts because they were known for extorting money from their fellow countrymen. Our tree climber was one such tax collector, Zacchaeus who encounters Jesus was a chief tax collector, meaning he held a higher position in this despised profession. He was a wealthy man who had likely gained his wealth through dishonest practices. When Zacchaeus hears that Jesus is passing through his town, he is curious and climbs up a sycamore tree to get a better view because he was considered small in stature. Jesus knows he is up there and tells him to come down because he intends to stay at his house. This act of Jesus reaching out to a tax collector and accepting his invitation to his home is seen as a significant event.

During their encounter, Zacchaeus is deeply moved by Jesus’ acceptance and grace. He repents of his wrongdoing and promises to give half of his possessions to the poor and make restitution to those he has cheated. In response, Jesus declares, “Today, Salvation has come to this house because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” This story is often interpreted as a testament to Jesus’ mission to reach out to those who were considered outcasts or lost in society. It illustrates the transformative power of encountering Jesus and highlights the message of Redemption and forgiveness. Zacchaeus, as a tax collector, was considered lost in terms of his social standing and his reputation but was “saved” through his encounter with Jesus and his subsequent change of heart. Are you ready to join him? What has been your encounter with Christ to feel this Redemption? Please pray for this sinner as I attempt to share the Gospel of Christ’s Life Eternal by sharing how to confess Him as our Lord and Savior. Give. Forgive. Confess and address sin to reman in a state of grace. Seek the lost help the lonely visit the sick share with the homeless live goodwill.  Amen.

Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.
