Gospel of Matthew Ch 22 v- 18 thru 22

18 Knowing their malice, Jesus said, “Why are you testing me, you hypocrites? 19 Show me the coin that pays the census tax.” Then they handed him the Roman coin. 20 He said to them, “Whose image is this and whose inscription?” 21 They replied, “Caesar’s.” At that he said to them, “Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.” 22 When they heard this they were amazed, and leaving him they went away.

They tried and tried and tried to catch Jesus breaking the Law or encouraging others to break the Roman occupied laws. But nothing. Jesus wasn’t about to break the laws that protect Him as much as it would condemn Him. You see, Jesus knows the Romans are ruthless but at the same time He knew they provided protection to worship as they saw fit which was every aspect of the Jewish faith. When the Jews were asked by Jesus to produce a coin that pays the Census Tax, their eagerness in producing a Roman coin implies their use of it and their acceptance of the financial advantages of the Roman government in Palestine. Jesus wasn’t about to get played. Amen.

The emperor Tiberius Caesar ruled from A.D. 14 through 37 and is the ruler Jesus spoke of when He said, “Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar” meaning those who willingly use the coin that is Caesar’s should repay him in kind. The answer Jesus provides avoids taking sides in the question of the lawfulness of the tax. But then Jesus closes with, “and To God what belongs to God” raising the debate to a new level of giving to God what God should receive from all of you. Jesus let those who have hypocritically asked about tax know that in respect to its relation to the law of God should be concerned with repaying God with the good deeds that are his due His Heavenly Father in Heaven. Pay your tax and tithe accordingly to God. Amen.
